A Coffee Lover’s Walk Through Kampong Glam

Beyond the mosque domes and mural-lined lanes, Kampong Glam has quietly become one of Singapore’s best pockets for coffee. Independent roasters, heritage kopi stalls, and hole-in-the-wall cafes all sit within a few minutes of each other, making it easy to slot a short coffee crawl into your stay at 56 Arab Street.

Old-School Kopi, Done Right

Before specialty coffee took over, this neighbourhood ran on kopi, coffee brewed through a cloth sock filter and sweetened with condensed milk. A handful of traditional coffee shops, or kopitiams, along North Bridge Road and Arab Street still serve it the old way, in thick glasses over ice or steaming hot. Order a kopi-o for it black and sweet, or a kopi-c with evaporated milk, and pair it with kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs for a proper local breakfast.

Specialty Cafes Around Haji Lane

Haji Lane and the surrounding shophouses hide a cluster of small-batch roasters and minimalist cafes, some tucked behind unmarked doors or up a narrow staircase. Expect single-origin pour-overs, oat milk lattes, and interiors built for a slow morning: floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed brick, and the occasional resident cat. These spots fill up fast on weekend afternoons, so a weekday morning visit usually means more elbow room and better light for photos.

Dessert and Coffee Pairings

Coffee here rarely comes alone. Look out for cafes pairing their brews with kaya toast, Middle Eastern pastries, or Japanese-style souffle pancakes, a reflection of Kampong Glam’s mixed Malay, Arab and international character. A few spots along Bussorah Street also pour Turkish coffee and mint tea if you want to switch things up between stops.

Planning Your Coffee Crawl

Most of these cafes and kopitiams sit within a 10 to 15 minute walk of our pods, so you can comfortably fit two or three stops into one morning without needing transport. Go early for quiet corners and soft light, or later in the afternoon when the lanes fill with the neighbourhood’s evening energy. Either way, pace yourself: Singapore’s humidity makes a strong coffee hit differently by midday. Whichever route you take, you’re never far from a good cup before heading out to explore the rest of Bugis and the city beyond.
