When we were planning MET A Space Pod, deciding where to put it mattered just as much as deciding how to design it. We landed on Arab Street, right at the edge of Kampong Glam and a short walk from Bugis — and looking back, it’s one of the best calls we made. Here’s the thinking behind that choice, and why this particular corner of Singapore makes sense for a capsule hotel built around smart, simple travel.
A Neighbourhood With Character
Arab Street isn’t a generic hotel district. It sits inside Kampong Glam, one of Singapore’s oldest and most storied enclaves, lined with shophouses, textile stores, and the golden dome of Sultan Mosque just around the corner. Guests who stay with us step outside into narrow lanes full of fabric shops, perfumeries, and family-run eateries, not a strip of chain stores. For travelers who want to feel like they’ve actually arrived somewhere — not just landed in an airport-adjacent hotel zone — this kind of neighbourhood does a lot of the work for us before we even open the door.
Connected to Everywhere
Character alone doesn’t make a good base; a hotel also has to put guests within easy reach of the rest of the city. Bugis MRT station is a short walk away, linking two train lines that reach most of Singapore’s major districts without a transfer. Several bus routes run along the nearby main roads, and Changi Airport is a straightforward trip by train, bus, or taxi. We chose this spot specifically so guests could spend their time exploring the city instead of commuting across it.
Built for Independent Travelers
Arab Street and Bugis already attract a particular kind of traveler: solo explorers, budget-conscious backpackers, and short-stay visitors who want a comfortable, secure place to sleep without paying for space they won’t use. The area’s existing mix of hostels, cafes, and round-the-clock eateries catered to that crowd long before we arrived, which made it a natural fit for a capsule concept built around efficient private pods, shared common areas, and flexible stays. We weren’t introducing a new kind of traveler to the neighbourhood — we were simply giving one that was already here a better place to stay.
Old Street, New Idea
Part of what we find rewarding about this location is the contrast it sets up. Kampong Glam’s shophouses and heritage buildings carry decades of history, and we get to add something new to that story: a modern, space-efficient way to stay right in the middle of it, rather than on the outskirts looking in. Every guest who checks in is minutes from centuries-old mosques and generations-old spice shops, and just as close to the train that can take them anywhere else in Singapore they want to go.
We didn’t choose Arab Street because it was convenient for us — we chose it because it’s genuinely one of the best places in Singapore to be based, whatever kind of trip you’re on.
